There are eight 2021 winners of the Altagamma Young Entrepreneurs Award – Believing in the Future, which was created in 2015 with the aim of highlighting emerging Italian companies in the various sectors represented by Altagamma. The Award aims at identifying and approaching the new generation of creative entrepreneurs, offering exclusive tools for their growth path and new relational opportunities in the Italian high-end ecosystem. Here are the eight winners divided by category. Fashion: La DoubleJ – Design: Internoitaliano – Jewellery: Sabba and SO-LE Studio – Food: Portofino Dry Gin – Speed: Moto Parilla – Hotellerie & Wellness: Fragile Cosmetics – Innovation: Orange Fiber.

Moda: LA DOUBLEJ

DoubleJ is Milan’s multi-tasking destination for high-frequency fashion distinguished by the winking twist and cheerfulness of its founder J.J. Martin. Relying on the best artisans in the industry, its 100% Made in Italy collections highlight Italian craftsmanship and the art of good living typical of the Bel Paese. All La DoubleJ’s creations are the result of a vision filtered through lenses of pure joy, bright colours and love for all that is maximalist.

Design: INTERNOITALIANO

Internoitaliano is a publisher of objects, complements and furnishing elements, with the vocation of bringing typically Italian design and technical manufacturing quality to the international scene. Internoitaliano’s system has a beating heart made up of a production fabric made up of a network of artisan workshops that embody the excellence of the Italian ability to create products of the highest quality. The ambition is to restore a value of normality to design: products are designed to be long-lasting and to become part of our daily lives with personality and discretion.

Gioielleria: SABBA

Sabba is a high jewellery maison founded by Alessandro Sabbatini in 2014. Each piece of jewellery is produced in a single piece and made by a few selected Italian and French hands, in a constant dialogue between creator and artisan. Alessandro Sabbatini began his career as a designer at Cartier, which he left in 2014 to realise his dream: a production of very few pieces, conceived as journeys through colours and shapes with no limits on the choice of stones. A single common thread: to produce very few pieces in order to celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of every woman.

Gioielleria: SO-LE STUDIO

SO-LE Studio was born in 2017 under the guidance of Creative Director and Founder Maria Sole Ferragamo. SO-LE Studio’s mission is to transform discarded materials such as leather and brass into unique jewellery, amulets and armour for all generations. Its creative headquarters are in Milan, while production remains in the Florentine hills. SO-LE Studio presents one collection per year with new designs. Previous collections are constantly reinterpreted with new shapes and finishes. The key words of SO-LE Studio’s portraiture are: longevity, dynamism, versatility, lightness and a sense of provocation.

Alimentare: PORTOFINO DRY GIN

Portofino Dry Gin is a craft distillate created to celebrate the beauty of the Italian landscape and the rich heritage of the Ligurian Riviera. The iconic product celebrates Klaus Pudel – grandfather of Portofino Dry Gin’s Founder and CEO, Ruggero Raymo – who saved Portofino from destruction during World War II, deeply loving the village and hosting the finest parties of the ‘La Dolce Vita’ era in the 1950s and 1960s. Just like Pudel, this gin is characterised by a creative and refined spirit with an unmistakable Mediterranean note, that of fresh lemon and juniper and 19 other botanicals that evoke the taste of traditional Ligurian cuisine.

Velocità: MOTO PARILLA

Moto Parilla was born within the Motor Valley ecosystem in Emilia Romagna in 2017 and echoes the eye-catching style and originality of the historic motorbike brand in vogue in the 1940s and 1960s. The new company has created a new concept of e-bike, with a very high degree of innovation and design to unite the world of motorbikes and bikes, producing every component entirely in Italy. Moto Parilla’s e-bikes are produced with incredible tailoring, in limited numbers and totally bespoke, with maniacal attention to quality materials, finishes and assembly.

Hotellerie & Wellness: FRAGILE COSMETICS

Fragile Cosmetics offers a multi-sensory genderless experience through natural, vegan and eco-friendly products for hair and skin. From the experience of Franco Gobbi, an international hairstylist who has worked on fashion shows and photo shoots all over the world, and the research and development skills of design-loving entrepreneur Manuela Affatato, comes a line where love of nature merges with the very idea of beauty. An essential multifunctional line that combines precious organic and sustainable active ingredients with unisex and eco-friendly fragrances and design. According to them, Fragile is a way of representing the delicate balance between human nature and the planet we live on.

Innovation: ORANGE FIBER

All the beauty of Mediterranean nature, Sicilian creativity and Made in Italy excellence, encapsulated in a unique material designed to meet the fashion industry’s need for innovation and sustainability and help preserve the precious resources of our Planet. You wouldn’t expect a vehicle like the ROV from Lexus. In recent years Lexus design has shown its eclecticism with projects that go beyond the purely automotive context, and are extremely diverse, from the Lexus LY 650 luxury yacht to the sci-fi Skyjet designed for the film “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”, to the Lexus Hoverboard, the magnetic levitation skateboard.

The ROV (Recreational Off-road Vehicle) unveiled in Brussels during the Toyota Kenshiki Forum is a four-wheeled vehicle and the comparison with the Lexus range, where it is unmatched, comes naturally. What is new for the brand, however, is first and foremost its hydrogen propulsion, hence the decision to design a vehicle capable of offering a luxury lifestyle experience even when driving off-road, but in a responsible manner and without carbon emissions.

The ROV follows the Omotenashi philosophy at the heart of Lexus design: in the spirit of Japanese hospitality, it surprises people by anticipating their needs and paying attention to every detail. For the Lexus ROV concept, the design team developed a vehicle that would do well in all kinds of natural environments. The concept has all the characteristics of a true off-road vehicle, with visible suspension, a protective cage and generous tyres specifically for driving on muddy roads in a extremely compact body: 3.1 metres long, 1.7 metres wide and 1.8 metres high.

Engineers designed a body that could protect passengers, incorporate the iconic Lexus signature grille and still retain enough travel for the front suspension. In addition, the front wings were designed to offer protection against any stones thrown up while driving or mud. The suspension cover, which is connected to the rear hydrogen tank, protects the functional parts as well as conveying a sense of robustness common to all Lexus SUVs.

The commercial vehicle sector is increasingly being affected by the energy transition; so much so that for certain uses, such as an urban one, this type of propulsion is a congenial response to their needs. However, at this stage, the models on the market are not yet fruit of original designs and specifically dedicated platforms, but rather variants of traditional ones, based on a design that is still classic, even if in sync with the times. The efforts to distinguish them, even visually, are currently concentrated on details and finishes.

This is confirmed by the latest model due on the market in these days, namely the new Ford E-Transit, a zero-emission variant of the Blue Oval’s Large Van. Equipped with a 100% electric powertrain, it takes up the shape and design of the traditionally powered variants that have ensured the success of the eighth generation, launched back in 2014.  Although the size and lines are almost the same, the new Ford E-Transit differs from its conventionally powered twin in the addition of distinctive design elements. The front end features the classic hexagonal grille embellished with three light blue stripes and the flap containing the vehicle’s charging sockets.

In the cab or double cab van version, the words E-Transit appear in capital letters on the tailgate, highlighted by another blue strip. As with the exterior design, the interior of the passenger compartment remains true to the characteristics of the conventionally powered versions. At the centre of the dashboard is the 12″ touchscreen which, for the first time on a commercial vehicle, houses the SYNC 4 infotainment system with a number of functions specifically designed for the zero-emission vehicle.

A piece of art, not just a car. This is how Flavio Manzoni, Chief Design Officer Ferrari, defines the Daytona SP3, the new limited edition sportscar that joins the Monza SP1 and SP2 in the “Ferrari Icona” special segment. To create this new collectible jewel, his team was able to operate with a stylistic freedom rarely allowed in the case of a supercar: “It was a true design-driven project, with which we pay homage to the evocative volumes of Sport Prototypes without any nostalgic approach, projecting the Ferrari design language into the future ».

The inspiration for the sensual forms of the Daytona SP3 are the historic racing cars of the 1960s such as the 330 P3/4, the 330 P4, the 350 Can-Am and the 512 S, but without literal or retro references. The architecture (derived from LaFerrari) is also typical of racing cars, with a naturally-aspirated V12 engine mounted in the center-rear position. This is the most iconic engine of the Maranello company, with 840 HP of power (the most powerful to date produced by Ferrari), 697 Nm of torque and a maximum revs of 9500 rpm.

“To ensure maximum formal purity we have deliberately avoided active aerodynamic elements, working on the maximum efficiency of the car body and studying with the engineers new solutions such as the “chimneys” that extract low-pressure air from the underbody, with the air passing through the doors and conveyed towards the tail», explains Manzoni. The sculptural forms are rich in unprecedented and surprising details, such as the semi-retractable headlights (an eyelid rises to reveal the otherwise covered high beams) and the horizontal blades that completely wrap around the car rear end, concealing the thin strip of the headlights, invisible when they are off.

Formal purity and great refinement are also found inside, a cockpit-like environment where the dashboard has an airy and enveloping appearance, while the fixed seats are shaped like a mantle that connects the two seats with the door panels. A mix of sportiness and elegance that, not surprisingly, is the result of the work of two different teams from the Maranello Style Center headed by Manzoni: the one led by Carlo Palazzani, head of the exterior design of the Sports cars, and that of Fabio Massari, the Granturismo interior chief designer.

In the next issue of Auto&Design we will tell the complete design story of this fascinating “targa” coupé of which 599 units will be produced, to be delivered from the end of 2022 at a price of 2 million each. As usual, already sold out.

Auto&Design and Alcantara have selected the ten finalists of the competition “Dress Your Vision – Alcantara is on board”, an online competition open to transportation design students and car design enthusiasts. The young creative artists were invited to devise design proposals for future mobility using the Alcantara material in an innovative way.

The projects of the ten finalists will now be evaluated by eight highly qualified jury members: Andrea Boragno, Chairman and CEO of Alcantara, Silvia Baruffaldi, Editor of Auto&Design, Domitilla Dardi, Maxxi Design Curator, Alec Ishihara, Principal (Color Materials) & UX Designer Microsoft, Manuele Amprimo, Chief Interior Design C&T and HMI Lamborghini, Annette Baumeister, Head C&T BMW, Rossella Guasco, Color&Material Design Stellantis and François Farion Design Director, Colors and Materials Groupe Renault. The winning project will be announced on December 3rd on the website and on our social channels.

The Experience

The Experience by Milton Royan Gabriel is the study of a modular interior environment dedicated to the vehicles of the future. The seat can be more traditional or hammock-like for longer trips where self-driving comes into play. Alcantara is used as upholstery and has small air bubbles in its weave that can inflate and deflate to increase comfort and better take the shape of the passenger’s body.

Alcantara Alveare

Alcantara Alveare by Saahil Kapoor takes advantage of the versatile nature of Alcantara to study solutions and upholstery for large-scale shared transportation. In the project, Alcantara covers the hexagonal cell inside which the passengers take their seats, guaranteeing comfort during the journey, a high level of hygiene and cleanliness and good durability.

Alcantara C1

Alcantara C1 by Adam Cal shows the interior in a vehicle that can be used for future urban or short-distance transportation. The interior is upholstered with Alcantara, but to make the most of the material’s properties, the project envisages combining it with a “spandex” fabric that allows it to stretch up to 600% without deforming and losing its properties.

Alcantara New Material Use

Alcantara New Material Use by Marian Vasile Dragon imagines using the material to decorate certain external elements of a first-generation Citroën C4 Cactus. The project thus departs from the more frequent use of Alcantara as an interior upholstery material.

Armor

Armor by Takumi Matsuo Imagines a new way of using the red carpet at film festivals. Actors and celebrities will arrive aboard an electric car with red Alcantara interior that they will find as the material of which the red carpet is made once they get out of the car.

Bau Paradise

Bau Paradise by Shota Ozaki imagines Alcantara as the lining of a space dedicated to animals and their owners. While the latter will enjoy a comfortable and relaxing contact with Alcantara, the animals can play relying on the high resistance of the material.

Classic Future

Classic Future by Ryousuke Uemura proposes Alcantara upholstery for the seats of the cars of the future, designed to be inspired by feminine forms and the European artistic and cultural movements of the past. An example? The Classical Period.

Alba

Alba by Leary Estrada imagines an autonomous vehicle to transport two passengers in the year 2050. The vehicle’s Alcantara-upholstered interior creates the ideal luxurious in which to relax and sip a Martini or an Asahi beer on the way to a hotel, the airport or any appointment.

Luminosity

Luminosity by Vladimir Pavlov is a car seat created with the aim of increasing the physical contact between the human body and Alcantara, creating a strong connection between the material and the passenger. The pattern that defines the contact points is orange circular lines that can also light up at night with a fluorescent effect.

Music Concept

Music Concept by Ryoga Kihsimoto aims to explore the use of Alcantara also as dedicated upholstery for the audio system on board a vehicle, thanks to its softness and sound absorption capability. In this case, the speakers could be placed in the Alcantara seat, thus creating a connection between materials.

Volvo inaugurates an ultra-fast 150 kW recharging station in the Porta Nuova district of Milan, a few steps away from Volvo Studio Milano, a dealer and event hub. The Volvo Recharge station has been designed by Land, an international landscape consulting company founded in 1990 with offices in Italy, Switzerland and Germany and which has projects in Europe, Canada, Middle East and Russia. These include Portanuova, the Raggi Verdi strategy and the redevelopment of the former Expo Mind area in Milan.

“The Volvo Recharge is not just an ordinary electricity distributor, but an integrated space within the Porta Nuova district that is experiencing a new era,” says Andreas Kipar, co-founder and ceo of Land.  “We have taken care of every aspect of this infrastructure, trying to make the concept of sustainability visible and transmit it to the urban environment,” continues Kipar. Roberta Filippino, the project leader, has designed for the ceiling of the Volvo Recharge a sky that changes color replicating the real one just like the one of Volvo Studio Milano and to give a sense of vitality to the project a plane tree has been planted directly in the ground. The themes of sustainability and biodiversity are declined through the presence on the roof of a perennial flower meadow.

The infrastructure is owned by Coima, the real estate company that has given new life to the Milanese district by building, among others, the Bosco Verticale, while the management of the infrastructure and the operating system are by Duferco and the supplier of charging services (Volvo’s partner) is Plugsurfing. Volvo Cars aims to become an all-electric car manufacturer by 2030 and plans to launch a whole new range of 100% electric cars in the next few years, as part of one of the industry’s most ambitious electrification programs. It also aspires to become a climate-neutral company by 2040.

Polestar has announced the winners of its second annual global design contest. The Polestar Design Contest invites both professional designers and students to showcase innovative thinking that encourages positive change in society, including responses to the ongoing climate crisis. Winning designs in each category can also be viewed on a Polestar 2-specific app, on the brand’s website or in person at Polestar Spaces.

The project didn’t have to be a car, just as long as it embodied the spirit of Polestar and demonstrated that design can be the driving force for positive change. “It was inspiring to interact with so much emerging and experienced talent. We’ve seen designs evolve from creative sketches to 3D models, proving that the world is full of exceptional professionals,” said Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s head of design. The ideas received were very diverse and included buildings, aircraft, cars, driverless delivery vehicles and electric bicycles. These were narrowed down to a shortlist of 10, from which the overall winners were chosen.

For the professional category, the winner was David Vultaggio from France with his concept “H_UB” – a new garage concept of the future, including a Polestar experience center and several places to hang out while charging the vehicle. “H_UB” recognizes that automotive brands are moving away from simply designing and manufacturing vehicles, to offering a complete ecosystem of mobility solutions and different ways to access energy.

For the student category, the first prize went to Mingwei Liu from China with his project “Glad to be dirty” – a car that tackles local pollution with on-board air filters that are visible from the outside. The vehicle is a small, simple geometric car with an architectural interpretation of Polestar’s styling vocabulary. It has a central side panel that shows the progressively dirty air filter, showing how clean the car has been of the environment during the driving phases, moving individuals to greater environmental awareness.

Honorable mention went to Finland’s Kristian Talvitie for the Koja project. Koja is a natural space surrounded by trees to provide a rich and immersive experience of contact with nature for people who would otherwise need to travel far to experience these sensations. The design maximizes views from the trees with a panoramic glass facade and minimizes ecological impact with high space efficiency and low resource intensity. It aims to encourage positive change in society by helping to reduce travel.
